Bill Hust, age 63, of Verona, departed his earthly life on Nov. 27, 2023, following a fierce year-long battle with cancer, with his wife by his side.
Bill was born in Milwaukee to Fred and Mary Jane Hust on January 3, 1960. He graduated Arrowhead High School in 1977, at age 16, and was a standout athlete in baseball, football, and later on, golf and volleyball.
Bill nurtured and cared for the land like a part of his family, working magic with turf as a golf course superintendent at courses such as Willow Run, Trapper’s Turn, and Tumbledown Trails, or maintaining properties like the Fitchburg Library campus. While he spent years nurturing the family land in Mount Horeb and at Blue Mound State Park as a member of the Wisconsin DNR, volunteering as camp host, or officiating local volleyball leagues, his most cherished role was as a full time Dad to his daughter, Amelia, and beloved stepdad in a blended family.
When he wasn’t camping, repairing something, or working outdoors, he could be found at the bowling alley putting up big scores, out on the boat, watching his daughter (with whom he was a stay at home dad for three years) play volleyball, or playing bag boards with his wife.
Bill married the love of his life, Diane, in 2002, and renewed vows in 2020. He is survived by his wife; his lovely daughter, Amelia Ann; his stepchildren, Connor McKenzie, Martin McKenzie, Paige, and Jake Eichenberger; and their son, Charles William. He is further survived by his loving mother, Marija Gibson; father, Fred Hust (Jane); brother, Mike; niece, Carly; along with aunts, uncles, and cousins. Bill left behind his loyal dogs, Fancy and Maggie, who miss him dearly. Bill was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Ally; his maternal grandparents; and paternal grandparents, Norbert and Margaret.
A Life Tribute service will be held at Memorial UCC on Lacy Rd. on Jan 6, 2024, from 1-3; followed by celebratory toasts and hors d’oeuvres at Ten Pin Alley on Nesbitt Rd, Fitchburg. Please bring a colorful carnation (Bill’s January birth flower) to fill the vases at the church, and a written tribute to be shared at the service and/or cherished by the family. Memorials are welcome to the Friends of Blue Mound State Park or Amelia Hust Education fund, both for which Bill had great passion.
“The purpose of life is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, and to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson – Well done Bill.
