Susan Reheis Iaccarino died on December 27, 2023, at her home in Middleton, Wisconsin, following a long illness. She was born on October 10,1944, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Norman and Laverne (Saal) Reheis and was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Dr. Edward Iaccarino.
Sue was an accomplished woman who had a love for learning and an unwavering commitment to helping others. She attended Washington University in St. Louis, where she earned her Bachelor's degree in English and German, the University of Wisconsin-Madison for a Master's degree in German, and Rutgers University for her Masters in Social Work. She had a successful career as a social worker at various health care centers throughout the many years she spent living in the New York City area.
Sue adored the vibrancy of New York and frequently attended Broadway shows or spent afternoons exploring museums and neighborhoods. However, in 2019, she decided to move to Middleton to be closer to her son. She joined PLATO and Who's New in Madison (WNIM) within days of her arrival and enjoyed attending the classes and lectures (PLATO) and participating in book and film discussion groups (WNIM). She loved film, reading, animal rescue, travel, photography, fashion, politics, knitting, crocheting, and trying new cuisines. Her passion for animals and children led her to actively support The Elephant Sanctuary (Tennessee), Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest (Washington), Children's Brain Tumor Foundation (New York), Dana Farber Cancer Institute (Boston), Animal Defenders International (California), Mylestone Equine Rescue (New Jersey), The Seeing Eye (New Jersey), Guiding Eyes for the Blind (New York) and her latest interest, the Tiny Hooves Animal Sanctuary (Wisconsin).
Sue is survived by her son, Greg (Trish) Iaccarino, nieces, nephews, and her beloved cat, Chloe. Greg and Trish wish to extend a heartfelt thanks to all the medical providers who worked with Sue throughout her illness, and especially to the home health aides from Senior Helpers who provided invaluable care during these difficult last few months. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to any of the organizations listed above, all of which were close to Sue’s heart.
We will always remember Sue as a strong, intelligent woman who had an inquisitive nature and generous spirit who touched the lives of everyone around her. We plan to host a “gathering of friends” open house sometime in the early spring to celebrate her life. We will post details at a later date.
