Richard Stumbo, 88, of Madison, Wisconsin, passed away on January 14, 2024, in Madison. He was born on July 11, 1935, in Falls City, NE. He married Virginia Timby on February 14, 1960, in Kansas City, KS. He and Virginia raised their daughter in Des Moines, IA, and later lived in Lawrence, KS. Richard was an intelligent and bookish individual who had a great sense of humor. He loved talking with people and making them laugh.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia; his daughter, Amy Knupp; son-in-law, Justin Knupp; and two grandchildren, Aria and Colton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe and Florence Stumbo; his brother, Roscoe "Bud" Stumbo; and his sisters, Mary Ann Salo and Betty Resch.

Richard began his education at Hastings High School in Nebraska. He then earned a bachelor's degree in history at Carleton College and a master's degree in English at the University of Kansas. In his early career, he was an English professor at Flat River Junior College in Flat River, Missouri, the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Rapids, and Midland College in Fremont, Nebraska. He later worked in public relations for the State of Iowa.

Richard was a member of Advent Lutheran Church in Madison, Wisconsin. His hobbies included reading, photography, stamp collecting, and loudly cheering on the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He also enjoyed playing bridge and watching tennis.

A memorial service is planned for the spring to celebrate Richard's life. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
