Peter J Mortenson

July 26, 1936 — September 30, 2022

Madison

Peter J. Mortenson died September 30, 2022, at Attic Angel Place. The son of William & Luella Mortenson, Peter was born July 26, 1936, and attended Randall Elementary School and West High School (1954) and went on to graduate from Ripon College with a major in Economics (B.S., 1958). He began his professional career at WKOW-TV where he met Jean Trecek and they married May 5, 1963, in the Boscobel Methodist Church.

Peter held many different positions with WKOW, starting with the production staff and ending as Operations Manager. He worked as Program Service Director at D’Arcy Advertising Company, Chicago, Vice President of Stoffels/Mortenson, Madison, Marketing Services Manager at Wick Building Systems, Mazomanie, and Vice President-Account Supervisor at Lindsay, Stone & Briggs before retiring in 2001.

Peter was a member of several organizations throughout his professional life, including Governor Lucey’s Blue Ribbon Commission to study the implications of cable TV and the Madison Advertising Federation, from which he received the Silver Medal Award in 2006. He was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church.

A habitual reader, Peter could often be found deep into a book when not out for a walk working through his thoughts, staring at a lake counting his blessings, tickling the ivories to fill his soul, or toasting his friends and family with a Bombay gin martini. His twinkling eyes and smile were always a ready gift to anyone he met.

Peter’s greatest joys were being with his family and spending cherished times at Woodland Lodge in Elcho along with the other member families. He loved the 1.5 hp motor on his “putt putt” boat exploring in and out of the small bays of Lake Enterprise.

Peter is survived by his wife, Jean; children Peter Jr. (Brenda) and Mary (Peter) Duff; grandchildren Allyssa & PJ III and Phoebe & Luella; brother Paul (Corinne); brothers-in-law Joe Trecek, Jr., Vern (Mar) Trecek, sister-in-law Joyce (Cecil) Parker; and five nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 15, 2022, at 11:00am at First United Methodist Church, 203 Wisconsin Ave, Madison. Visitation will be from 9:30am until the time of the service. Peter’s service will be streamed on the church’s website: www.fumc.org.
