Pavel Pinkas, PhD, of Madison, WI, passed away on February 18th, 2023, at the age of 54. He was preceded in death by his mother, and left behind his father, brother, and adopted son.
Pavel was born in Prague, in the Czech Republic, and came to the United States to pursue a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin after obtaining his PhD in chemical engineering. He settled in Madison and utilized his skills as a self taught computer programmer to go on to a 25+ year career as a software engineer.
Pavel enjoyed coaching the Madison West High School Rocket Club and led that group for more than 20 years. During his tenure Pavel inspired over a thousand students to reach new heights through science and engineering. Under his mentorship the Madison West High School Rocket Club earned three national level titles, three 2nd place International titles, a second place in NASA's Centennial Challenge, and supported 20 NASA Student Launch teams. More importantly, Pavel's Rocket club was a family for all of his students, many who describe it as both the highlight of their high school experience and the spark which launched their subsequent careers.
Pavel was a warm, kind and funny teacher, and a good father, for which he will be greatly missed. Those who were blessed to cross paths with him witnessed his love for life, humor, and joyful being. His passion for science and mentoring students touched the lives of many who will greatly miss him. We hope you can join us in honoring his life by raising a parting glass to him and living life to the fullest. May your soul live freely and peacefully forever, Pavel.
