Patrica L. Backes

Patricia Louise Backes, age 83, of Decorah, Iowa passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 17, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, September 21, 2026, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dodgeville, Wisconsin.

Pat was born July 26, 1943, in Elk River, MN, to Peter and Pauline (Sadecki) Kuklock. She graduated from Elk River High School in 1961, married in 1964, and raised five children.

Pat was an avid reader and active in her Christian faith. She took great joy in her children and grandchildren.

Pat is survived by her children, Brian, Janeen, Lynee, and Chad; 7 grandchildren, Sam, Jacob, Max, Zander, Charlie, Beatrix, and George; and siblings, Robert and Rodney.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Deanna, and her siblings, Bernard, Rose, and Kenneth.

Below are thoughts from my mom's close friend. I would add that she was devoted to her family, hardworking, and generous. She loved gardening, preserving foods, cooking, and watching Johnny Carson. Anything she made was delicious, homemade dumpling soup, holiday dressing, and cinnamon rolls being some favorites.

Pat's friends always admired her strong Faith in Jesus. They frequently had discussions about what God was doing in their lives and always counted on each other for prayers. Many were said together and individually, for themselves and their families especially.

Pat’s spunk and determination were unparalleled. She was an avid reader on world & church events. We all admired her desire to get involved, to make a difference by writing letters, and staying on top of the issues she was passionate about.

Though life was difficult for Pat, with her hearing and other health concerns, she maintained a sweet disposition of grace & gratitude. She always thanked those who helped her.

A precious moment one friend will forever remember happened the last day she was with Pat. She did not want to leave Pat alone in her apartment because she was very weak. Pat looked her in the eyes, smiled and said “I’m not alone, Jesus is with me, He always has been.” There was such a peace and contentment that radiated from her countenance, her friend knew at that moment that she was ready to be embraced in the arms of her loving Savior.

We thank God for Pat—her big heart, her beautiful soul, and the Faith & special friendships she shared. She was deeply loved.
