Karen Nell Sample-Mangan

January 18, 1973 — January 11, 2026

Karen Sample-Mangan, age 52, passed away on January 11, 2026.

Born on January 18, 1973, in Madison, Wisconsin, Karen lived with a strong sense of curiosity and adventure. She found lasting enjoyment in visiting national parks, appreciating both their beauty and their power to recharge her soul.

Karen spent the early part of her career working as a data analyst before embracing teaching. She had a deep love for mathematics and a rare ability to make complex ideas clear and approachable. Teaching allowed her to combine precision, patience, and care. She took great pride in helping students build confidence and understanding. Her lessons were rigorous, but sprinkled with laughter and energy.

Outside of her professional life, Karen was an avid knitter, a practice that reflected her creativity and intelligence. She was also a committed advocate for women’s rights, guided by a strong belief in fairness, equity, and opportunity.

Karen was most proud of her children and she approached parenting with devotion, encouragement, unwavering support, and a grounded sense of reality.

She is survived by her husband, Tim Mangan II; her children, Alec Mangan (wife Juliet Cheng), Tess Siegmund (husband Drew Siegmund), and Ian Mangan; her parents, Tim and Elaine Sample; and her sisters, Christina Sample (husband David Sharlin) and Beth Brooks (husband Warren Brooks).

Karen will be remembered for her intellect, her generosity, and the unapologetic passion with which she cared for her family, friends, and community. Please join family and friends in remembering and celebrating Karen’s life February 7th, from 1-3pm. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider a donation to your local parks or domestic violence shelter on Karen’s behalf.
