Juan Ortegon

October 1, 1948 — December 30, 2024

Juan Ramon Ortegon, affectionately known as “Monchy” or “El Don Juan,” passed away peacefully on December 30, 2024, in Madison, Wisconsin surrounded by his love ones. Born on October 1, 1948, in Eagle Pass, Texas—and later registered in Piedras Negras, Coahulia—Juan’s life was a journey of strength, love, and resilience. At the age of 76, Juan left this world with his spirit shining brightly in the hearts of those who had the blessing to know him.

Juan's early years were divided between Texas and Piedras Negras, following his mother Consuelo's return to Texas during his adolescence. He eventually met Martha Talamantes in Plainview, Texas and followed her to Minnesota, where they had their children his first-born son Juan Ortegon Jr (BeBe), his daughters Priscilla Ortegon and Yvonne Talamantes.

Seeking new opportunities, Juan moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he spent several enriching years and met his (ex)wife, Catalina Alba. In Chicago, Illinois he had two additional children, Iris and Jacob Ortegon.

The family later relocated to Marytown, Wisconsin, where Juan found fulfillment at a local mink ranch. It was here that three more children—Alexandra, Matthew, and Joshua Ortegon—joined the family. Juan’s journey continued to Fond Du Lac, where he and Catalina raised their family, instilling in all of them the perseverance and values that defined them.

An industrious individual with a talent for hard work, Juan spent his career as a Bobcat Operator at Midpark Nurseries until health challenges compelled him to retire. Despite being diagnosed with renal kidney failure, he bravely chose dialysis for 20 years, proving an inspiration to all—including the medical staff who marveled at his tenacity. He was known to declare with unwavering confidence, “I’m not ready to go, I’ll tell you when it’s my time.” Juan's personality was as vivid as his life. Known for his infectious laugh, vivacious spirit, and playful antics, he left an indelible mark on all who knew him, particularly the nurses at his dialysis clinic.

Beyond his work ethic and commitment, Juan delighted in company by his family and long-time friends. He cherished long summer days, enjoying the sun with a Corona and having his friend and family by his side, and could be found reminiscing over old Tejano music or sharing tales of his youth spent playing baseball. His legendary winter fry-outs, adventurous car rides, and visits to Wisconsin’s state parks were testaments to his zest for life and love for tradition. Juan’s personal legacy is marked by his enduring love for his eight children, 33 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren.

Juan is survived by his children Juan (Amanda) Ortegon Jr. (Bebe), Priscilla Ortegon, Yvonne Talamantes, Iris (Simon) Garcia (Guzman), Jacob Ortegon, Alexandra (Michael) Olson, Matthew (Amanda McEssey) Ortegon, Joshua (Amy Freund) Ortegon. And a numerous number of grandchildren and great grand kids. His devoted and loving sisters Margarita Navarro, Maria Fuentes and Consuelo Gonzalez.

He is preceded in death by his parents Ramon and Consuelo Ortegon. And his grandson Steven T. Welentz as they both finally reunited together.

As we honor Juan’s life, we pay tribute to a gentle soul and a devoted father. His journey may have ended, but his legacy lives within us, a guiding light illustrating the power of a life well-lived. May we continue to carry his love and wisdom forward, keeping his memory alive
