James B. Schappe, age 92, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2025. He was born on January 4, 1933, to Norbert and Gertrude Schappe.
On September 4, 1954, Jim married the love of his life, Grace Sheehan. Together, they built a life full of laughter, family, and adventure.
Jim proudly served in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Electrician’s Mate, where he flew early drones over the Atlantic during reconnaissance missions. One of his favorite stories from that time was traveling to Bermuda to play football for the Navy base team — a memory he loved to share.
Before his service, Jim was a standout athlete at Madison West High School, finishing 2nd in the state cross country championship. After his military career, he spent many years working as a respected real estate appraiser in the Madison area.
Jim is survived by his children: Lynn Grady, Alan (Teresa), and Steve; his grandchildren: Erin (Frank), Jon, Amy (Brad), Allison (Matt), Brooke (Lilah), Ben, and Brittany; and great-grandchildren: Cassidy, Chase, Charlotte, Matthew, Jack, and Beckett. He is also survived by his siblings: Craig Schappe (Sue), Judy McMahon (Bernie), and Rick Schappe.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Grace, daughter Patricia Ann, son-in-law Michael Grady, brother Norbert, Sisters-in-Law Margery Schappe and Ginny Schappe and his faithful dog, Shaddoe.
Jim was a lifelong fan of bourbon and Jeopardy!, and often enjoyed both at the same time. He loved cheering for the Packers and Badgers, fishing, playing horseshoes, and spending time with family and friends. Even in his late 80s, he zipped around the neighborhood bike path on his scooter and welcomed all to his backyard bourbon hour each Friday.
He and Grace treasured their winters in Florida in their RV and their summers at Fish Lake. A devoted birdwatcher, Jim could identify nearly any bird by sight or sound — and whistle their songs with remarkable accuracy.
He was kind, thoughtful, funny, and always had a classic dad joke at the ready. And for those lucky enough to hear it, his harmonica rendition of Moon River was unforgettable — a sweet and soulful memory that will live on in our hearts.
Jim touched many lives with his warmth, wit, and generous spirit. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date for family and friends.
