James E. Rasmussen, 70

Poynette – James E. Rasmussen, formerly of Arlington, passed away at his home on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. James was born on January 31, 1956, in Poynette, Wisconsin, to James I. and Helen Rasmussen (Swanson).

Growing up, James experienced significant loss during his late adolescence, losing his mother to leukemia when he was just 16 years old and his father unexpectedly at age 21. These experiences shaped the course of James’ life, including his role in helping care for his sisters, Cynthia and Patricia Rasmussen. Later in life, he became a foster parent and continued to have family play an important role in his life.

After graduating from Poynette High School in 1974, James spent time traveling, visiting friends, and working at his family’s business, Arlington Hardware. In 1980, he met his future wife, Brenda Theel. They married in 1981, and James adopted Brenda’s daughter, Andrea Rasmussen. They made their home in Arlington, where their family later grew with the addition of their son and daughter, as well as through their experiences as foster parents.

James enjoyed traveling and camping with his family, working on and repairing computers, and caring for many different types of animals over the years. He loved to talk and could strike up a conversation with just about anyone on nearly any subject. Those conversations could last for hours, no matter the time of day or night.

James will be remembered by his children: Andrea Rasmussen of Waunakee, Travis (Jennifer) Rasmussen of San Diego, and Tanya (Jeremy) Zisky of Milwaukee; his sister, Cynthia Rasmussen of Columbus; his brother-in-law, Bill Kutz of Poynette; his grandchildren, Kyle Nesbit, Conner Wilson, Jaxson and Jasmine Moten, Liam Rasmussen, and Zoey and Avaleigh Zisky; as well as many friends, cousins, and his beloved Aunt Marie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James I. and Helen Rasmussen; his sister, Cynthia Kutz; his wife, Brenda Rasmussen; and many other family members and friends.

The family requests that memorials or flowers be sent to Columbus Health & Rehab, where Cynthia resides. The family extends a special thank you to the staff of Columbus Health & Rehab and Bristol Hospice for their care and support.

A celebration of James’ life will be held in Arlington. Date and details will be announced at a later time.
