James Kopatz

May 1, 1954 — January 25, 2026

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Ray Kopatz, 71, of Blanchardville, Wisconsin, on the 25th day of January 2026. Our beloved husband, father, and Papa passed peacefully at his cabin surrounded by his wife and daughters.

Jim was born in Springfield, Illinois on May 1, 1954, to Fred and Arlene Kopatz. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Julie Robison. Jim is survived by his wife, Betsy; his children, Carli (Dylan), Courtney (Javi), Christopher (Jessica); and stepchildren, Ryan and Brooke (Jake). He was a loving and devoted Papa to nine grandbabies - Smith, Charlotte, Talon, Wren, Donovan, Jackson, Navy, Peyton and Everleigh.

Jim grew up on the baseball diamonds of Springfield, Illinois. He was named All City in basketball, football and baseball a total of 9 times. Jim then attended the University of Illinois where he was a three-sport athlete. He played quarterback for the football team as well as baseball and basketball. He was drafted by the California Angels after his senior year in high school, the New York Yankees after his junior year of college, and by the St Louis Cardinals, in the 4th round, following his senior year of college.

After college, Jim moved to Wisconsin to pursue his career. Jim kept his love of sports throughout his life - whether he was playing softball or cheering on his favorite teams. His true devotion in life was watching his children and recently his grandchildren play their chosen sports. Jim also had a great fondness for animals including his beloved dogs, Serena, Boulder, Vail and River. While the thought may have crossed his mind, Jimmy never once said "No" when Betsy randomly brought home another animal.

Another life love for Jim was traveling to Colorado, including hiking at Piney Lake in Vail. He and his family spent many wonderful years visiting this beautiful mountain town. He also found great joy visiting his daughters in Florida and North Carolina, seeing the ocean, and walking along the beaches.

Jims happiest times were when he was surrounded by his family. He will always be remembered as a person you could count on who never hesitated to help anyone in need.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association https://www.lbda.org/ in memory of Jim.

A celebration of Jim's life will be scheduled and announced at a later date.
