Jack E. Stoskopf, Sr. passed away peacefully at his memory care center in Cambridge, Wisconsin with his wife, Anita, of 67 years by his side on April 23, 2026. Jack was born on February 6, 1936 at the family home in Warroad, Minnesota. It was one of the coldest days in recorded history for Warroad, with a temperature of -55 degrees on that date. He was the youngest of 6 children born of Harry and Violet Stoskopf. Jack was the last remaining member of his immediate family.
Jack was an outstanding athlete, regardless of the activity. His number one sport was hockey where he excelled by making the high school varsity team in Warroad as an 8th grader. He then went on to play hockey and baseball at the University of North Dakota. Jack married Anita L. Rouse on September 6, 1958 and continued his education, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. While finishing school, Jack and Anita had the first two children, Nancy and Jack Jr. Upon graduation, he took his first job at the Bar-None Ranch in Oak Grove, MN where he was a counselor for wayward youth boys. The third child, Mike, was born while working there. Jack began his teaching career in Phelps, Wisconsin where he taught physical education for one year. Jeff was born just 9 days before the family moved from Minnesota to Wisconsin. Jack then took his permanent teaching job in the Eagle River School District. It is there he taught physical education for over 30 years and spent many winters coaching youth and high school hockey. He played on the local men’s hockey team, the Eagle River Northernaires.
In retirement, Jack and Anita purchased a cottage on a lake in Eagle River for the whole family to enjoy. After 10 years, they sold the cottage and began to travel in their motorhome around the country. They eventually settled in Bonita Springs, Florida and spent 25 winters providing a vacation haven for family and friends to visit whenever they wished. They traveled back to Eagle River every summer to enjoy their friends, family and the north woods.
Jack was a tremendous husband, father, and grandfather, always putting his family’s needs ahead of his own. A humble man who never missed an opportunity to tell a joke or throw out many of his one-liners. This is evidenced by the following nicknames; His daughter Nancy was referred to as Shafranski. His daughters-in-law were; Sara (Sahara), Sue (Soufflé), and Shaune (Shaunessy).
He lived a full and very generous life for 90 years and will be missed dearly. He is survived by his wife Anita, children Nancy Brill (Mike), Jack Jr,. (Sara), Mike (Sue), and Jeff (Shaune), 9 grand children, Jordon, Daniel, Tim, Hannah, Levi, Corbett, Mark, Rebecca, and Grace along with 9 great grand children.
A celebration of life service will be planned at a date yet to be determined.
