Jack E. Stoskopf, Sr. passed away peacefully at his memory care center in Cambridge, Wisconsin with his wife of 67 years by his side on April 23, 2026. Jack was born on February 6, 1936 at the family home in Warroad Minnesota. It was one of the coldest days in recorded history for Warroad, with a temperature of -55 degrees on that date. He was the youngest of 6 children born of Harry and Violet Stoskopf. Jack was the last remaining member of his immediate family.
He was an outstanding athlete, regardless of the activity. His number one sport was hockey where he excelled by making the high school varsity team in Warroad as a 8th grader. In 1953 his team took second at the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament where he tied a few other players as the leading scorer in the tournament. He then went on to play at the University of North Dakota before a career ending injury his sophomore year. He played baseball in college too. He married Anita L. Rouse on September 6, 1958 and continued to get his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. While finishing school, they had the first two of their 4 children, Nancy and Jack Jr. Upon graduation, he took his first job at the Bar-None Ranch in Oak Grove, MN where he was the counselor for wayward boys. The third child, Mike, was born while working there. He then took his first Physical Education teaching job in Phelps Wisconsin where he taught for one year. Jeff was born just 9 days before the family moved from Minnesota to Wisconsin. He then took his permanent job in the Eagle River School District. It is there he taught PE over 30 years and coached youth or high school hockey the entire time and played on the local men’s hockey team.
In retirement, Jack and Anita purchased a cottage on a lake in Eagle River for the whole family to enjoy. After 10 years, they sold the cottage and began to travel in their motorhome around the country. They eventually settled in Bonita Springs, Florida and spent 25 winters providing a vacation haven for family and friends to visit whenever they wished. They traveled back to Eagle River every summer to enjoy their friends, family and the north woods.
Jack was a tremendous husband and father, always putting others’ needs ahead of his own. A humble man who never missed an opportunity to tell a joke or throw out many of his one-liners.
He lived a full and very generous life for 90 years and will be missed dearly. He is survived by his wife Anita, children Nancy Brill (Mike), Jack Jr,. (Sara), Mike (Sue), and Jeff (Shaune), 9 grand children and 9 great grand children.
A celebration of life service will be planned at a date yet to be determined.
