Gail Irene Knitter, 79, of Madison Wisconsin died in Hospice at Capitol Lakes on February 19, 2026. She was born November 6, 1946 to Pearl and Henry Von Knitter in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Gail lived in Kenosha until moving to Madison in 1969. She worked at Jackson Clinic from 1970 until 1978. Gail worked for Madison General Hospital School of Nursing until she began working as an Executive Assistant for the Vice President of Medical Affairs at UnityPoint Health-Meriter Hospital until her retirement in 2012.
Gail was a wonderful person – humorous, kind and very strong in her faith. Per Gail’s wishes, no services will be held.
Gail was preceded in death by her parents, Pearl and Henry Von Knitter and her longtime companion, Bob Gower. Surviving are her brother, Reid Knitter (Wendy); her special friends Jim and Ann Phelps and Dave Groneng; numerous friends and co-workers; and the SAM members at Messiah Lutheran Church.
In lieu of a memorial, please send donations to Messiah Lutheran Church, the Dane County Humane Society or the Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin.
We want to express our sincere thanks to both the staff at Capitol Lakes and to the team from Agrace Hospice Care for the compassionate and loving care given to Gail.
