It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Frank George Schaefer, who died on July 22, 2024, in Madison, Wisconsin, at the age of 82.
Frank was born to parents Frank and Evelyn (Lehmann) Schaefer on February 16, 1942, in Maywood, Illinois. He graduated from Purdue University in 1965 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. Shortly after, he married his high school sweetheart, the love of his life, Noeleen June Gorman (“the prettiest girl at Proviso”). The couple moved to Houston, Texas, where Frank embarked on a rewarding lifelong career in building and real estate investment. Frank and Noeleen were blessed with two daughters, Susan and Holly, and in 1977, moved to the West Coast after falling in love with California on a family trip.
Frank had a zest for life and a love of history and travel. He enjoyed experiencing diverse cultures and meeting new people. He was particularly passionate about space exploration, having had the unique opportunity to meet several astronauts over the years. Known for his sharp wit and sense of humor, Frank was a beloved prankster who brought joy and laughter to those around him. He loved word games and puzzles, with Scrabble being one of his favorites. Frank was an avid gardener and enjoyed playing tennis in his free time. He was a sports enthusiast, especially when it came to college basketball (go Boilermakers!). A generous soul, Frank loved helping others as a volunteer, a coach, and a mentor.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Robert Schaefer; brother-in-law, Bob Malinowski; and his cherished wife, Noeleen, who passed away in 2021. He is survived by his daughters, Susan Schaefer Bernardo (Kevin Polk) and Holly Schaefer (Nick Siebers); his four grandchildren: Brendan, Charlie, Eliza, and Anna; his beloved dog, Berkley; his brother-in-law, Ed Gorman; sister-in-law, Barbara Malinowski ;along with beloved nieces and nephews, and many dear lifelong friends. His legacy of love, laughter, and adventure will continue to inspire us.
In 2022, Frank left California and moved to Wisconsin to be closer to his daughter Holly’s family. We are grateful for the love and care he received from the Siebers family, Diane Haglind, Dr. Wendy Molaska, and Agrace Hospice. In accordance with Frank’s wishes, there will be no funeral or services.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to his favorite charities, the Door of Faith Orphanage (www.dofo.org) or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
