Dorothy Marie Schuler, of Madison, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2023, at the age of 95.
Dorothy was born on October 8, 1927, the only child of Dorothy and Paul Brockman, in Madison, Wisconsin. Mother and daughter were affectionately known as Big Dot and Little Dot.
Dorothy’s early years were spent living in “the flats” on Frances Court (long gone as a part of the Kohl Center project), with many relatives as neighbors. Eventually, the Brockman's moved out next to the railroad tracks on Beld Street, where they spent the rest of their lives.
For education, Dorothy attended Holy Redeemer School, Edgewood High School, and the University of Wisconsin, where she graduated in 1951 with a degree in Journalism. Her first job after graduation was for a newspaper in Burlington, WI. One of her assignments was to interview a local resident who had been born in Burlington to German parents, returned to Germany as a child, eventually serving in the German army in World War II, then returned to Burlington after the war. It was quite an interview, as she and the gentleman, Frank Schuler, were married at the end of the year and settled in Madison.
Dorothy had a wide variety of jobs over her long professional career, and for many years worked as an administrative assistant at the University, where she retired with a pension.
Dorothy and Frank had two sons, Robert and Jeff, but eventually divorced after 25 years of marriage. Dorothy then met David Schwehr, with whom she remained for over 30 years, until the time of her death. She and David enjoyed traveling around the State of Wisconsin, and she was definitely not afraid to try new things, many of which surprised, and occasionally confounded, her sons. 😊 She lived a very spirited, rather unconventional life, always on her own terms.
Dorothy was preceded in death by husband, Frank; and her parents, Dorothy and Paul Brockman. She is survived by her sons, Robert (Gail) Schuler and Jeff (Ellen) Schuler; grandkids: Rebecca, Brian, Eleni, Hannah, and Sophie; great grandkids: Oliver, Milo, and Maeve; and partner David Schwehr.
There will be a private family burial.
