Deborah Lee Kinsey Sangalang, born June 11, 1952, passed away on December 17, 2021 after a decades long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. She left this earth peacefully at home holding the hand of her devoted husband, Pedro Sangalang.
Debbie, the third of five children, was born in Santa Monica, California to her parents, Douglas and Constance Kinsey.
In addition to being a mother to one and “extra mom” to two, she was also a Realtor and went on to earn her PhD in Public Administration, despite her advancing MS. Even as her mobility challenges increased, she continued to take the train into San Francisco to continue her studies, many times with Pedro by her side. She graduated as Dr. Deborah Sangalang from Golden Gate University in 2007 and proudly participated in the graduation ceremony.
Debbie was an excellent cook. Her family always looked forward to her making lasagna and chocolate cake! She liked to plan trips for her family and always had historical knowledge about every place they visited.
Debbie found joy and happiness in simple things, she was not materialistic and was incredibly generous, oftentimes opening her home and wallet to those in need.
She was able to laugh at her children’s adolescent mistakes; like when Lisa, learning how to drive a stick shift, ran into and tore off part of the garage, or when finding out about Amy and Doug’s late-night escapades while sneaking out of the house.
Debbie always maintained a positive outlook in life no matter how difficult her situation. Right up to the very end she was still making jokes and smiling.
Pedro remained by her side and dedicated his life to providing her care and keeping her at home, as she wished.
She is now in Heaven with her parents. While her family mourns her death, they are also happy that she is no longer trapped in a body that didn't allow her the freedom to live as she wished.
Debbie is preceded in death by her parents, Douglas Kinsey and Constance Cooke Kinsey. She is survived by her loving husband, Pedro Sangalang, “Extra daughters” Lisa-Marin Sangalang-Mieritz and Amy Marin Sangalang Johnson, son Douglas Kinsey; Grandchildren, Cheyenne, Summer, Kobi, Ava, Jonah, Benjie & Aria; and her four siblings, Doug, Katie, Rob & Don.
We would like to thank the caring team at Agrace Hospice and the caregivers at Brightstar. They were all instrumental in keeping Debbie at home and comfortable.
There will be a celebration of life held on June 11, what would have been her 70th birthday.
Please consider making a contribution to the Multiple Sclerosis Society with the hopes that in the future there will be a cure for others with this devastating disease.
