Claire Cecilia Mangin (nee Weber), age 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 2, 2023.
Born in Indianapolis, Ind., Claire attended St. Philip Neri Catholic School and St. Mary’s Academy. She then attended Butler University, studying History. Claire married the love of her life - Gene (Howard E) Mangin - and began a career as a military wife as he entered the U.S. Air Force. Together they traveled extensively throughout the US, living in South Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma, Indiana, Georgia, East Texas, Massachusetts, California, Minnesota, Delaware, Ohio, and finally settling in Madison, Wisconsin.
Their travels meant frequent visits from family and friends, and Claire was known as a skilled and gracious hostess. Her home was always neat and organized, a trait noted by the Nuns in high school, which she carried with her for her entire life.
She enjoyed meeting new people and showed great interest in the world and people around her. Her gift of conversation – a Weber family trait – was enjoyed by all she met. If Claire talked to a brick wall, it would answer back in friendly conversation. She had a quick wit and loved to laugh with family and friends.
Claire and Gene’s love story lasted 65 years. Together they toured the world, including trips to Europe, Italy, England, Ireland, Costa Rica, Australia, and New Zealand. Claire’s passion for American History, Furnishings, and Architecture, led them to explore historical sites and museums throughout the country. She read extensively on American historical subjects and political figures.
A lover of flowers and succulents, Claire always had a beautiful Jade plant in her home. She loved birds and feeding/observing them, and her impromptu breakfast conversation with a Toucan in Costa Rica led to many Toucan touches to her life.
Claire enjoyed playing Bridge, Harts, Euchre, and Poker, and often won – except when drinking wine! She was also partial to a good Gin Martini, and don’t forget the olives! Claire set a lovely holiday table and enjoyed fine dining and good food, drink, and company.
Claire adored her grandchild, Doug, and held her extended family dear. Her faith carried her through difficult times and had a great impact on her life, particularly after losing Gene in 2020. She missed him every day and brightened at the mention of him right up to her last days.
She is survived by her daughter, Amy Mangin-Foley (Ronald Foley); son, Michael Mangin (Dawn); grandson, Douglas Foley; sister, Jane Peerson; brother, Paul Weber (Ann); and a wonderful family of the Weber and Mangin clans. She was preceded in death by her parents, Irene L (nee Mills) and Norbert A Weber; her beloved husband, Gene Mangin; her sister, Ruth Weber; and brothers-in-law, Harry Weber and Joe Peerson.
A Memorial Service for both Claire and Gene Mangin will be held at Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, IN, on September 9, 2023, at 11 am in the Community Mausoleum. A Celebration of Lives will be held immediately following at Seasons 52, 8652 Keystone Crossing, Indianapolis.
