Christopher Burkeland

Our family solemnly announces the passing of our dear brother Christopher Kent Burkeland, (6/18/1959 -1/6/2026).

Christopher Kent Burkeland of Madison, WI passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 6, 2026 at the age of 66 from heart failure at UW Hospital.

Chris was the 18th child in a large blended family who lived in and around the Madison area. Family and friends will always remember his amazing smile, infectious laugh, compassion for others, and his dedication to family and friends.

He was a blessed musical talent playing many different instruments until his hands suffered rheumatoid arthritis which ended his playing days. He also was talented in prose, writing beautiful and poignant poetry throughout many years of his life.

Chris was employed for several years as general manager of China House in Madison, WI. In more recent years, he made a living as an independent contractor for Madison Newspapers.

He is survived by his longtime life partner Deborah Schell and her children, Nicole Blucher, and Jamie Schell, two brothers, Jerome “J.C.” Burkeland and Loren (Theresa) Burkeland, and three sisters, Katherine Slater, Lannette (Jim) Cutrell, Kathleen Sharp and several nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Elvie and Josephine (Brewer) Burkeland, and 12 of his siblings.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday January 31, 2026 from 1 until 4 pm at Spartan Bowl in Mc Farland Wi. Bring your memories and great stories.
