Charles G Roy, age 90 of Lake Mills passed away Sunday September 1, 2024 at home surrounded by family and friends. Per his wishes mugs were raised at Tyranena Brewery on Thursday Sept 5.
Charles was an only child born during the depression on December 27, 1933 in Neoga, Ill to Gilbert and Ellen (Peters) Roy. They had been married 11 years and although times were challenging, they were absolutely thrilled with their baby boy. A childhood filled with adventures in the small farming community fueled his desire to explore and enjoy each day. He graduated from Illinois Normal University in 1955 with a degree to teach History and Chemistry. He married Virginia McGuire in 1955 and were blessed with 5 children before divorcing in 1972. He taught high school in Yates City, IL before moving to the Chicago suburbs where he taught at West Leyden High School. In the 60’s he changed careers to Insurance Sales before moving to Lake Mills in 1994.
Charles lived what he considered the best years of his life in Lake Mills. He worked various jobs including Perry Printing, Hamlin Industries, Dutch Designs and Lake Mills Car Wash. He also dusted off his teaching credentials and was a substitute teacher at Watertown and Jefferson High Schools for many years. Charles loved being near the lake. He was often seen at Sandy and Bartels beach at Sunset. He was a night owl that loved dancing, reading and women.
He was preceded in death by his beloved dance partners Betty Ziegler of Jefferson and most recently Lois Drost of Cambridge.
Charles worked to give back to the community he loved so much, serving on the boards of the Historical Society and then Friends of the Library until last fall.
Charles is survived by his children Jennifer (Jim) Colegrove of Lake Mills, Ann West of Rockwall Texas, Kathleen Roy (Laurie) of Portland Oregon, Laura (Jim) Rexilius of Wheaton Illinois, Charles Roy of Naples Florida. 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of Flowers, memorials can be made in Charles’ honor to Friends of the Library and Rainbow Hospice.
The family would like to give special thanks to Rainbow Hospice Services and his neighbors for their exceptional care that allowed him to remain in this apartment.
