Carl Sevrens Sanger

Carl S. Sanger, aged 84, passed away at his home in Dane, Wisconsin, on September 13, 2026. Carl was born in Madison, Wisconsin on December 20, 1941, to Carl E. and Helene (Jorgensen) Sanger. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife Janyce Sanger and is survived by his siblings Jim (Mary Newton) Sanger of Wauwatosa, WI, Margaret (Mark) Bjelde of Verona, WI, and Art (Judy) Sanger of Middleton, WI, as well as nieces, nephews, and close friend Candace Holman.

After earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Carl taught art in the school district of Lodi, Wisconsin, where he was frequently honored by students as a positive influence on their lives. Accolades included “my most favorite teacher in the world,” “awesome teacher and person,” and “the coolest cat I ever met.” Following retirement, Carl enjoyed his association with the Waunakee Senior Center, where he shared his love of art with the community.

Outside of school, Carl enjoyed fly fishing, duck and deer hunting, model railroad construction, and collecting railway memorabilia. Always interested in his father’s service in the Navy in World War II, Carl amassed a large library of history books and souvenirs from both the Navy and the war. With his rare O negative blood type, he became a frequent blood donor as well as a volunteer with the blood center.

Carl was proud of the home he created in an old one-room schoolhouse in the countryside outside of Dane, Wisconsin, adding an artist’s studio in the bell tower. The family is indebted to Jim and John Sanger, Candace Holman, and Carl’s friends - Glenn, Jerry, Mark, Allen, James, and more - for the support they provided over the past decade, enabling Carl to remain in his home. Melissa at the Waunakee Senior Center and Meals on Wheels also provided much appreciated help.
