Brian Schmitt

August 30, 1966 — October 12, 2025

Brian Runde Schmitt, age 59, passed away at home on October 12, surrounded by his loving family, after an 11-month battle with cancer.

Born on August 30, 1966, in Madison, Wisconsin, Brian lived a life defined by hard work, independence, and a deep love for family and friends. Known for his craftsmanship, love of music, athleticism, and quick wit, Brian left a lasting impact on everyone lucky enough to know him. Brian was a natural storyteller, always ready to share a story from his youth — complete with vivid details and landmarks along the way, as if he were giving a personal tour through his past.

In his early twenties, after a short time in the mountains out west, Brian returned to Madison and met the love of his life, Ellie Treichel, on the frisbee field. A commanding player, Brian would yell “Go long!” before launching a full-field throw for Ellie to chase down in the endzone. Their connection on the field soon grew into a lasting partnership in life. Brian poured his heart into renovating their house, (formerly Ellie’s grandparents’ house), turning it into a home — one they filled with love, laughter, and their three daughters: Sarah, Elise, and Julia.

A guiding force in his daughters’ lives, Brian proudly instilled the family mantra, “Schmitts are tough!” — teaching them to be kind, strong, and on their best behavior... even though he himself was never a rule follower. He was the kind of dad who’d remind you not to use your phone at the dinner table — while scrolling on his under the table, living by the motto: “Do as I say, not as I do.” He was endlessly proud of the women his daughters are becoming, and his love and guidance (or unsolicited advice, lol) will forever be a part of who they are.

Brian was the owner of BRS Landscape Construction, where he poured energy into every project. His work beautified countless outdoor spaces across the community, and his own backyard patio remains a peaceful oasis and testament to his talent.

Beyond his work, Brian was a fiercely loyal friend who built deep, lasting relationships across every chapter of his life — from his West High School days and shifts at the Ovens of Brittany, to the many sports teams he played on. He loved live music, cold beer, and time spent with people who truly knew him. He was never the loudest in the room, but he was the one you'd want in your corner. Brian felt lucky to raise his kids alongside “the family friends”, sharing spring break road trips down south and lazy summer weekends at cabins up north. A kid at heart himself, he’d most likely be found hanging out with the kids at the party. He had a lifelong love of the outdoors and stayed active through ultimate frisbee, broomball, softball, and more recently, golf and kayaking — especially enjoying paddling on the water with Ellie and friends in recent years.

Throughout his cancer journey, Brian remained grounded in gratitude — for Ellie’s unwavering care, the love and support of family and friends, and the expertise and compassion of the team at the UW Carbone Cancer Center.

Brian is survived by his beloved wife, Ellie, and their three daughters, Sarah, Elise, and Julia. He is also survived by his sisters, Karen (Randy) Richter and Mary (Bob) Parsons; his brother, John Schmitt; his father- and mother-in-law, Bill and Sue Treichel; his sisters-in-law, Erika Treichel and Kristin Treichel; his brother-in-law, Mik Treichel; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dave and Elaine Schmitt.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 19, from 12:00–3:00 p.m. at Four Winds Farm, 5735 Adams Road, Fitchburg. Family and friends are warmly invited to gather in Brian’s memory. A special tribute will begin at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the UW Carbone Cancer Center or Solace Friends.
