Brian David Boucher, also known by his pen name, Simon Drax, passed away due to complications from cancer on Thursday, November 21, 2024, in his final, and beloved home of Monona WI, at age 59. He was born on February 3, 1965, in Haverhill, MA, to Alvin Boucher and Pauline Coogan Boucher.
Brian attended the Art Institute of Boston, where he studied graphic design. He was an Art Director for several major book publishing houses, including John Wiley & Sons and McGraw-Hill in New York City. He worked in a number of other fields as well, from steel cutter to caretaker in Massachusetts, New York, and Connecticut; and in Wisconsin was employed by Gordon Flesch Company.
As Simon Drax, he wrote and published four novels, including A Very Fast Descent into Hell, Doomtroopers, The Last Star in the Sky, and Exit Vector. Other writings include his poetry collection, Always Apocalypse All The Time, contributions to the horror-movie magazine Videoscope, his webzine “Final Weapon Ready,” and pieces in magazines, journals, and short story collections. Brian loved films of many different genres, even being known to endure the Twilight series with his daughter, while his favorites included Metropolis, Bride of Frankenstein and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. He also held a deep affection for the moon, submarines, old anime, pagan philosophy, music (including his all-time favorite band: Iron Maiden), visual art, holidays and celebrations (specifically Halloween, when he would leave a stack of comics next to the bowl of candy for trick-or-treaters), studies of the occult and great stories. Above all else, he cherished his children and loved ones, and his singular and unique personality will live on in our hearts forever.
Brian is survived by his partner, Allison Martin Bloom (Monona, WI), his children, Molly Boucher (Philadelphia, PA) and Jack Boucher (Bethel, CT), his siblings, Mark Boucher, Jaqueline Boucher Hannan and Summer Wilson, Allison’s children Miriam Bloom and Corrine Bloom, his ex-wife Laura Nichols, many nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his sister Karen Balsavage and his parents.

“The sky cracked with a distant boom. The mourners at the opposite end of the cemetery lifted confused faces to the dark shadow that bled across the sky, the sudden clouds that swelled and murmured with thunder. The clouds broke, spilled scattered tears, and then a downpour.
The sun was gone.
The sky sent hail,”
