Andrii Akulenko, of Madison, WI, passed away on April 24, 2024. No service information. He was born on March 17, 1941 in Novgorod Siversky, Ukraine to Andrii Akulenko and Raisa Zinchenko. After completing secondary school in Chernihiv, Ukraine, Andrii enrolled in Transportation Engineers College in Kharkiv at age 17, graduating in 1963. In 1969 he married Zhenya Solohub in Lviv, Ukraine. Survivors are his wife Zhenya, daughter Nataliya Akulenko of Madison, Wisconsin, son Andrii II of Kyiv, Ukraine, and three grandchildren.
After working as a switching foreman and rail traffic dispatcher, then a Head of Department at the Transportation R&D Institute, Andrii joined the Ukraine Ministry of Railways, for which he became Director of the Development Division in 1996 until retirement in 2011. In this position he traveled to many international meetings throughout Europe and Asia. Among Andrii's favorite hobbies were reading science fiction, fishing, walking his dogs, and watching soccer.
After Ukraine was invaded by Russia in February 2022, Andrii and his wife became refugees in Madison, Wisconsin. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer any donations for defense and recovery of Ukraine.
